ThingsCon: A conference about a human centric and responsible IoT

ThingsCon is Europe’s leading conference about the future of hardware, connected devices and Internet of Things (IoT). ThingsCon initially started in Berlin and is growing fast in a global community of like-minded believers of the IoT and new hardware.

ThingsCon Amsterdam started in 2014 as a one-day conference inspired by the previous edition in Berlin. Today ThingsCon includes an amazing international line up of top-notch speakers and around 330 attendees including Clay!

Rick Voogt, co-founder of Clay was one of the speakers during the “IoT for the home- from doorbell to coffee machine” session about how to design IoT products for everyday use in a household and bring them to market. Rick introduced the crowd to Clay’s IoT solutions that can be used for residential and business purposes like SALTO KS and the Clay Locking Platform (CLP website).

Other speakers included: Openr, a system to open the door in multi person dwellings, Smart baby monitor developed by ‘Artificial and Ikawa, the world’s first digital Coffee Roaster.

Some interesting insights:

  • IoT products should be designed for relevance and around a solid business model

  • The Co-Revolution: Co-living, Co-working, and community building

  • Good design isn’t just in product and software

  • Connectivity sucks, but don’t give up! All speakers mutually shared their connectivity related issues in the beginning of their journey

This year ThingsCon also hosted a special talent program with special attention to the work of students making interesting IoT concepts like designing the most interesting connected hotel room.

Apart from the conference ThingsCon also organizes about five ‘Salons’ (meet ups) a year. All with different themes like the Future of Making, The Internet of Bicycles and Intimate Technology. Make sure you sign up for one of them next year!

We very much enjoyed taking part in the discussion as a speaker, as well as a attendees. Thank you for having us ThingCon!
